Aurorabahn Mobility is hiring a backend engineer in Berlin. You will design the data models, services and APIs everything else in the product depends on. The work is judged on whether it stays correct under concurrency, partial failure and three years of requirement changes, not on how quickly the first version shipped.
German engineering hiring rewards depth and patience, and our process reflects that: two technical conversations, no timed puzzle, and a written offer within a week of the last one.
Expect a mix of new services, careful changes to old ones, and migrations on data that cannot be taken offline. You will write the design note before the code for anything substantial, and you will be the person who says out loud that a proposed change makes a guarantee impossible to keep. The team works a hybrid week out of Berlin, usually three days together and the rest wherever you work best.
This is a senior individual-contributor role. You will be expected to push back on requirements that do not make sense and to set the technical direction for your part of the product. We are looking for someone fluent in schema design and indexing who thinks about idempotency, transactions and ordering as a matter of habit. Depth in one server language matters more to us than a list of six.
Working time is tracked and respected, overtime is an exception rather than a culture, and German is useful for customer conversations but is not a hiring requirement — engineering runs in English. The range shown is the annual gross salary band for this role.
Aurorabahn builds the scheduling, ticketing and fleet software behind regional public transport operators in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. When a replacement bus service is announced at short notice, the plan that reaches the driver and the app is generated by our platform.
The domain is genuinely hard: timetables are a constraint-satisfaction problem, the data standards are old, and being wrong strands a real person at a real station. Engineers here spend as much time understanding the rules as writing code, and we consider that time well spent.
Our head office is in Kreuzberg, Berlin, with a second team in Munich. Engineering runs in English; German is useful for talking to customers but is not a hiring requirement.
