Backend Engineer, Device Telemetry
About the role
Around eighteen thousand inverters and meters report to us every few minutes over connections that range from decent 4G to a rural link that works only at night. Your job is to make the numbers we show a customer trustworthy despite that.
The actual engineering problem
Readings arrive late, arrive twice, arrive out of order, or arrive with a clock that is three hours wrong because the device rebooted. A naive sum over that data produces a savings figure that is confidently incorrect, and a customer who stops trusting the product.
You will work on the ingestion pipeline, the deduplication and gap-filling logic, and the aggregation layer that produces daily and monthly figures. You will also build the alerting that tells a field engineer a panel string has failed rather than waiting for the customer to notice.
What we look for
Three to six years of backend engineering. Time-series or IoT experience is welcome but not required; what matters is that you think carefully about correctness with unreliable inputs and that you are comfortable with a database beyond simple CRUD.
Responsibilities
- Own the telemetry ingestion and aggregation pipeline
- Design deduplication, ordering and gap-filling logic
- Build fault detection and field-engineer alerting
- Keep query performance sane as the device fleet grows
- Work with the hardware team on the device protocol
Requirements
- 3-6 years of backend engineering experience
- Strong database skills, including time-series or heavy aggregation work
- Experience with message queues or streaming ingestion
- Careful about correctness with untrusted, unreliable input
- Comfortable with Python or Node.js
Skills
Benefits
- Work with real hardware and visible physical impact
- Health insurance for you and immediate family
- Five-day week with flexible start times
- Site visits to installations if you want them
GreenGrid Energy
GreenGrid installs and monitors rooftop solar for housing societies and small industrial units across Gujarat, Rajasthan and Maharashtra. Our hardware reports generation and fault data every few minutes; our software turns that into savings reports, maintenance alerts and warranty claims.
The engineering problem is unglamorous and genuinely interesting: thousands of cheap devices on flaky rural connectivity, sending data that is sometimes late, sometimes duplicated and occasionally wrong. Getting a number you can put in front of a customer out of that is most of the job.
We are headquartered in Prahlad Nagar, Ahmedabad, with field teams in six cities.
