Java Developer, Policy Platform
About the role
Bellrock Analytics is hiring a Java developer in Manchester. This role sits on long-lived Java services that will still be running, and still being changed, in five years. That horizon shapes everything: explicit interfaces, real test coverage and changes that a colleague can review without a two-hour briefing.
Hiring in the UK means competing with London salaries wherever the role actually sits, so we pay a single national band rather than discounting outside the M25.
What the work actually looks like
You will build and evolve Spring Boot services, work through the domain with the people who understand it, and take part in the design reviews where the interesting decisions actually get made. There is a steady stream of performance and reliability work alongside the features. The team works a hybrid week out of Manchester, usually three days together and the rest wherever you work best.
What we look for
This is a mid-level role. You should already be able to take a loosely specified problem, break it down and ship it without close supervision. We are looking for depth: the JVM memory model, concurrency, JPA and where its abstractions leak, and the judgement to keep a service simple under pressure to do otherwise. Familiarity with a regulated or high-availability environment is a bonus.
Working at Bellrock Analytics
We work UK hours, and we treat the right to disconnect as a policy rather than a slogan. The range shown is the annual gross salary band for this role.

Bellrock Analytics
Bellrock Analytics prices risk for specialist insurers: marine cargo, renewable energy assets and commercial property in flood-exposed areas. Underwriters use our models to quote in minutes what used to take a week of spreadsheets and phone calls.
We sit in a regulated market, so every model change is versioned, explainable and reproducible years later. If you like the idea that your work has to survive being audited, you will enjoy it here more than most.
The company is based near Aldgate in London with a growing team in Manchester and Edinburgh, and we pay a single national band rather than discounting outside the capital.
