A short internship with one clear goal

Two months is not long, so this one has a single deliverable: a set of Bash and Python scripts that take the manual chores off our infrastructure team. Log rotation that currently runs by hand, certificate renewal reminders, a nightly database dump to S3 with a verified restore, and a healthcheck that pings every service and posts a summary to Slack each morning.

How the time is spent

Week one is orientation on our Ubuntu servers, systemd units, cron, users and permissions, and how our Nginx reverse proxy is laid out. From week two you pick tasks off a shortlist and ship them one at a time, each with a small README so the next person can run it. You will work remotely with a daily standup and a code review on every script, however small. Nothing goes to production without someone reading it first, including yours.

This one suits a final year student or a recent graduate who has already installed Linux on their own machine and broken it at least once. You need to read a man page without flinching and be comfortable with SSH. Prior job experience is not required or expected.

  • Script the log rotation and cleanup jobs that currently run by hand
  • Build a nightly database backup to S3 with automated restore verification
  • Write a morning healthcheck that pings every service and posts a summary to Slack

  • Package each script with a short README so the next person can run it

Requirements

  • Final year student or recent graduate comfortable spending the day in a terminal
  • Practical Linux experience from your own machine, a lab or a side project
  • Basic scripting ability in Bash or Python
  • Available for a daily standup during Indian Standard Time hours

Skills

Benefits

  • Monthly stipend for a short, focused two month engagement
