MongoDB and Mongoose Data Layer Intern

Where you fit
Data modelling decisions made in a hurry two years ago are the reason some of our pages take three seconds to load. This internship runs for three months, fully remote from anywhere in the world, and puts you on the data layer of the MailerMen platform with a clear brief: make the shapes right.
Projects waiting for you
The jobs collection stores employer details inline on every document, which was fine at a thousand listings and is not fine now. You will design the migration to a referenced company collection, write the Mongoose models and indexes, and run the backfill without downtime. Then you move to analytics, building an aggregation pipeline that turns raw application events into the weekly employer report, plus a change stream listener that keeps the search projection in sync.
Working across time zones
We overlap with India hours for part of the day and everything else happens in writing. You are expected to leave a comment explaining a decision, not only the code that implements it. Every migration script gets reviewed before it goes anywhere near production data, because these collections belong to real users.
Responsibilities
- Design and execute the migration from embedded employer data to a referenced company collection
- Write Mongoose models, validators and indexes for the reshaped collections
- Build a zero downtime backfill script with resumable batching
- Create aggregation pipelines that produce the weekly employer report
- Keep the search projection in sync using MongoDB change streams
- Circulate a short design note before each schema change
- Overlap several hours a day with the India based team
Requirements
- Final year student or recent graduate anywhere in the world, no work experience needed
- You have used MongoDB or another document database on a personal project
- Comfortable with asynchronous JavaScript and Node.js scripting
- Able to overlap at least three hours with Indian Standard Time
- Careful by temperament, because these scripts touch live data
