Senior Backend Engineer, Platform
About the role
Northwind Systems is hiring a backend engineer on a fully remote basis. You will design the data models, services and APIs everything else in the product depends on. The work is judged on whether it stays correct under concurrency, partial failure and three years of requirement changes, not on how quickly the first version shipped.
The US market for this role is deep and well paid, and candidates rightly compare offers carefully. The band below is the real band — we do not hold a number back for whoever negotiates hardest.
What the work actually looks like
Expect a mix of new services, careful changes to old ones, and migrations on data that cannot be taken offline. You will write the design note before the code for anything substantial, and you will be the person who says out loud that a proposed change makes a guarantee impossible to keep. The role is fully remote within United States, with a desk in the office for anyone who would rather not work from home.
What we look for
This is a senior individual-contributor role. You will be expected to push back on requirements that do not make sense and to set the technical direction for your part of the product. We are looking for someone fluent in schema design and indexing who thinks about idempotency, transactions and ordering as a matter of habit. Depth in one server language matters more to us than a list of six.

Northwind Systems
Northwind Systems builds the deployment and rollback tooling that sits between a merged pull request and a running service. Around four thousand engineering teams use it, and roughly a third of them have never spoken to a salesperson — they found the CLI, tried it and expensed it.
Because our users are engineers, the bar for the product is unusually literal: an error message that is vague gets filed as a bug, and a documentation page that is wrong gets a pull request within the hour. We treat both as the compliment they are.
The company is headquartered in San Francisco with engineering hubs in Austin and Toronto, and about half of the team is remote across North America.
