Servers should not be pets

Our EC2 instances were each set up by hand and every one of them is slightly different, which is fine until a patch needs applying to all of them on a Friday. In two months at our Bengaluru office you will turn that fleet into something reproducible.

The plan

You will write Ansible roles for the base server build: users, SSH hardening, unattended security updates, the Node runtime, log shipping and the Nginx config. Then you will bake those roles into a Packer image so a new instance joins the load balancer ready to serve rather than needing an hour of setup. Along the way you will run an inventory of what is currently installed where, which is the unglamorous part and also the useful one. If time allows you will write the restore drill: take a database snapshot, rebuild a server from the image, and prove the whole thing comes back.

About you

You are in your final year or recently graduated, you have used Linux beyond a single lab assignment, and you would rather write a playbook once than repeat a command sixty times. Familiarity with YAML and Git helps. Professional experience is not expected.

Responsibilities

  • Inventory what is installed on each existing EC2 instance and record the drift
  • Write Ansible roles for users, SSH hardening, security updates and the Node runtime
  • Bake those roles into a Packer image so new instances boot ready to serve
  • Move the Nginx and log shipping configuration into version controlled playbooks
  • Test every playbook against a throwaway staging instance before a production run
  • Draft the restore drill that rebuilds a server from image and snapshot

Requirements

  • Final year student or recent graduate able to join our Bengaluru office on a hybrid basis
  • Practical Linux use beyond a single lab assignment
  • Comfortable with YAML and a basic Git workflow
  • Patience for repetitive work that eventually removes itself

Skills

Benefits

  • Monthly stipend for a focused two month project
  • Mentor review on every playbook before it runs against production
  • Certificate of completion with a written performance summary
