Why this role exists
Schema design is the part of backend work most tutorials skip. Our recruiter product keeps job posts, applications, employer accounts and a messaging inbox in one PostgreSQL database, and the Prisma schema behind it has grown faster than anyone planned. This six month internship exists to help clean that up and then extend it.
Work you will pick up
You start by writing read queries against existing models, because you should know the data before you change it. From month two you own migrations: splitting the bloated applications table, adding partial indexes for the recruiter dashboard filters, and backfilling data with scripts that must be safe to run twice. Later you build the saved search feature end to end, from Prisma model to Express route to the seed data the frontend team develops against.
Fit
You should be comfortable writing SQL by hand and not only through an ORM, and willing to sit with a query plan until it makes sense. Everything is remote across India, with one short video standup each morning and a written weekly update that you will actually be asked to write.
Responsibilities
- Extend and refactor the Prisma schema behind job posts, applications and employer accounts
- Write and test database migrations, including splitting an oversized applications table
- Add partial and composite indexes to speed up recruiter dashboard filters
- Build safe, rerunnable backfill scripts for production data changes
- Ship the saved search feature from Prisma model through to the Express route
- Produce seed data the frontend team can rely on for local development
- Read query plans and report before and after timings for every optimisation
Requirements
- Final year student or fresh graduate comfortable working independently for six months
- Able to write raw SQL joins, aggregates and filters without leaning on an ORM
- Familiarity with Prisma or another ORM from coursework or side projects
- Node.js fundamentals including modules, promises and error handling
- Reliable internet and availability for a daily morning standup on Indian Standard Time
