About the role

Northwind Systems is hiring a full stack developer in Toronto, ON. You will own features end to end: the schema, the endpoint, the interface and whatever it takes to keep all three working afterwards. That breadth is the point of the role — nothing gets thrown over a wall, and nobody has to wait a sprint for another team to expose a field.

We pay one Canadian band rather than adjusting by city, so a candidate in Halifax and a candidate in Toronto see the same number for the same work.

What the work actually looks like

Weeks vary. Some are mostly interface work with design, some are mostly data modelling and query tuning, and some are spent on the unglamorous seams in between. You will be trusted to decide where a piece of logic belongs and to say so when a requirement would make the system harder to change later. The team works a hybrid week out of Toronto, ON, usually three days together and the rest wherever you work best.

What we look for

This is a senior individual-contributor role. You will be expected to push back on requirements that do not make sense and to set the technical direction for your part of the product. We are looking for someone who is genuinely comfortable on both sides rather than a specialist who tolerates the other one. You should be able to design a reasonable schema, write a component you would not mind maintaining, and deploy the result without needing a hand.

Working at Northwind Systems

The team spans Eastern and Pacific time with a fixed four-hour overlap, and meetings are kept inside it. The range shown is the annual gross salary band for this role.

Responsibilities

  • Own features from database schema through API to finished interface
  • Write and review code across both the server and the client
  • Keep the deployment and migration path for your work boring and reversible
  • Break loosely specified problems into shippable pieces
  • Support what you ship, including the parts that fail at inconvenient hours

Requirements

  • Commercial experience on both a front-end framework and a server runtime
  • Comfortable designing schemas and reading a query plan
  • Familiar with modern deployment: containers, CI and environment configuration
  • Able to work from a rough brief rather than a finished specification
  • Clear written communication — much of the team is not in the room

Benefits

  • Extended health and dental from day one
  • RRSP matching
  • Four weeks of paid vacation
