Observability Intern - Logs, Traces and Alerting

Where the logs go today
Right now our logs live in twelve separate files on three servers and the only way to debug a failed email send is to SSH in and grep. Over three months from our Delhi NCR office you will replace that with a proper observability stack and make it something the whole team uses daily.
The build
You will stand up Loki for log aggregation with Promtail shipping from every host, define structured JSON logging in the Node services so fields are queryable instead of guessable, and add OpenTelemetry tracing across the API gateway and the two worker services so a slow request can be followed end to end. Then you will build the dashboards that matter: signup funnel errors, email bounce rates, background job backlog, and a daily AWS spend panel that has already surprised us once. Alerts route to Slack with sensible grouping so the channel stays readable.
What you bring
Comfort with Linux and the command line, some scripting in Python or JavaScript, and an interest in querying data rather than eyeballing it. Final year students and recent graduates only, and no previous internship or job in infrastructure is expected.
Responsibilities
- Deploy Loki and Promtail so logs from every host land in one searchable place
- Convert the Node services to structured JSON logging with consistent field names
- Add OpenTelemetry tracing across the API gateway and both worker services
- Build Grafana dashboards for signup errors, email bounces and job queue backlog
- Create a daily AWS spend panel and flag unexpected jumps
- Configure Slack alert routing with grouping that keeps the channel readable
Requirements
- Final year student or recent graduate in engineering, IT or a related field
- Comfortable on the Linux command line and reading application logs
- Some scripting in Python or JavaScript
- Able to work a hybrid schedule from our Delhi NCR office
- Interest in querying data, with no previous infrastructure job required
