Observability and Monitoring Intern

Ask three of our engineers what happened during last quarter's queue backlog and you will get three different answers, because our dashboards did not tell the story. Fixing that is the point of this three month internship, run from the Hitec City office two days a week with the rest of your time wherever you work best.
What you will build
A single service health view. You will instrument our Node services with OpenTelemetry, push traces into the collector, and build Grafana boards showing request latency, queue depth and delivery failures side by side instead of scattered across four tools. Along the way you will add structured logging to two older services that currently print unformatted strings into the void. You pair with a senior engineer on Tuesdays, keep a short written log of what you tried, and present the finished dashboard to the wider team before you leave.
Who should apply
Final year students or recent graduates with solid Linux basics, some JavaScript or Python, and the sort of mind that enjoys turning a vague complaint into a measurable number. If you have ever run Grafana in Docker on your own laptop just to see what it does, you will settle in quickly. No professional experience is expected, and nobody will ask you for years of it.
Responsibilities
- Instrument two Node.js services with OpenTelemetry tracing and export to the collector
- Replace unstructured print logging with structured JSON logs in older services
- Build one service health dashboard covering latency, queue depth and delivery failures
- Agree alert thresholds with the on call engineer and test them in staging first
- Keep a written experiment log of what you tried and what the data showed
- Present the finished dashboard and your findings to the wider engineering team
Requirements
- Final year student or recent graduate in a technical discipline
- Working knowledge of Linux basics such as processes, ports and log files
- Some JavaScript or Python, enough to add instrumentation to an existing service
- Genuine interest in turning vague complaints into measurable numbers
