Our search results page has a Largest Contentful Paint of 4.1 seconds on a mid range Android device, and Google has noticed. Bringing that number down is the entire job.
Six months, one metric at a time
You start by instrumenting things properly, so field data from the web vitals library flows into our analytics and we stop arguing from Lighthouse scores alone. Then you go after causes: render blocking CSS on the homepage, an unsized hero image shifting the layout, a font loading strategy nobody has revisited in years, and 300KB of date utilities shipping on every route.
Tooling you will live inside
The Chrome DevTools performance panel, WebPageTest, Lighthouse CI wired into pull request checks, and a great deal of careful before and after measurement. You will learn to distrust a single run and to read a flame chart without flinching.
Showing your work
Every fortnight you publish a short performance note to the engineering channel covering what improved, what regressed, and what you are chasing next, and you present it in person on one of your three office days in Hitec City. By month six you should be able to defend a caching or bundling decision to someone senior. That skill outlasts whichever framework you happen to learn along the way.
Responsibilities
- Instrument field data collection with the web-vitals library and pipe it into analytics
- Diagnose and fix Largest Contentful Paint regressions on the search results page
- Eliminate layout shift caused by unsized images and late loading fonts
- Trim the JavaScript bundle by auditing dependencies and adding route level code splitting
- Wire Lighthouse CI into pull request checks with realistic performance budgets
- Publish a fortnightly performance note for the engineering team
- Present measured before and after results at the monthly engineering review
Requirements
- Final year student or recent graduate; performance experience is not expected
- Roughly understands how a browser parses HTML, requests assets and paints a page
- Comfortable reading and debugging JavaScript you did not write
- Willing to measure carefully rather than trust a single Lighthouse run
- Available hybrid from Hyderabad, three days a week in Hitec City
