Web Accessibility & Inclusive Design Intern

An audit last quarter turned up 214 accessibility failures across our application, and about a third of them sit in the apply flow, the one screen every candidate has to get through. Fixing that is your remit.
Your three months
You will work through the backlog with axe DevTools and a screen reader, starting with keyboard traps in the modal dialogs and the unlabelled controls on the resume upload step. From there you move to colour contrast across our design tokens, then to focus management in the multi step application wizard. Towards the end you will write the accessibility checklist that every new component gets measured against in code review.
The setup in Pune
Three days a week in the Baner office, two from home. You pair with the engineer who owns our design system, and once a fortnight you sit in on a session where a blind user tests our flow live. Those sessions permanently change how people write markup.
What you actually need
Comfort with HTML semantics and enough JavaScript to fix an event handler. ARIA patterns, WCAG success criteria and assistive technology are all things you can learn here. Curiosity about how other people use the web counts for more than the length of your resume.
Responsibilities
- Work through the accessibility backlog, starting with keyboard traps in modal dialogs
- Fix unlabelled form controls and error messaging in the resume upload flow
- Test key journeys with NVDA and VoiceOver and file issues with reproducible steps
- Raise colour contrast failures against our design tokens and propose replacements
- Author the component accessibility checklist used during code review
- Attend fortnightly usability sessions with assistive technology users
Requirements
- Final year student or fresh graduate, no prior professional experience required
- Solid grasp of semantic HTML and why a div is not a button
- Enough JavaScript to correct focus management and event handlers
- Able to work hybrid from the Baner office three days a week
- Patience for detail work and for retesting the same flow many times over
